Provider of the Year

Maryland Community Connection (MCC) received Maryland Works Employment Award for the 2010 Provider of the Year. This award goes to a non-profit Maryland community service provider who has achieved significant outcomes in the employment of individuals with disabilities. On June 24, 2010 Cathy Raggio, Secretary Maryland Department of Disabilities and Alexander Sanchez, Secretary of Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation presented to André Burno Coates, MCC Executive Director and Kimblyn Snyder, MCC Deputy Director, the 2010 Provider of the Year Award.

LISS Information Sessions in the 5 counties in the month of April

 During the month of April we are holding LISS workshops to assist residents in the 5 counties with filling out their applications

Calvert County – April 14th in the Calvert County Health Department 1pm-5pm

The workshop will be held in the Calvert County Health department 975 Solomons Island Road North, Prince Frederick, MD 20678 on April14th between the hours of 1-4pm. Please contact our office at 301-583-8880 to get more information and to R.S. V.P.

HSC Member Named 2010 Fellow of the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation

“Being selected to participate in the 2010 Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Fellows Program is an honor. I am excited for this great opportunity to collaborate and participate in partnerships with other Executive Directors in Maryland.”
 
These are the words of (Ms.) Andre’ Burno Coates, Executive Director of Maryland Community Connection and proud HSC member and participant in the Nonprofit Incubator Program.  Coates is one of 16 fellows named to this unique program for nonprofit development and agency management.
 
The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Fellows Program provides practical, hands-on interactive sessions and rich networking opportunities to select executive directors of community-based non-profit agencies serving disadvantaged individuals. These leaders from agencies across Maryland will embark on a year-long professional development program designed to enhance leadership skills and promote collaboration among the region’s nonprofits.  
 
Said Coates, “This opportunity will help me expand the future growth of Maryland Community Connection and the community services we provide to individuals with developmental disabilities.”

Walking Program Starts!

Maryland Community Connection has started a walking program. If you would like to join,  please call us at 301-583-0358. This program is open to all participants, including family members, and friends of Maryland Community Connection.

             All walkers must pre-register at Forestville Mall on any day from Monday –Friday 9:00 am-5:00 pm in order to participate.

If you would like to register with Maryland Community Connection’s staff, please stop by the mall on Friday, March 5, 2010 from 1pm-3pm.

 The group walk will begin on Saturdays, March 6, 2010 to May 22, 2010 from 8:30 am—9:30 am each Saturday. Walkers will be given pedometers, t-shirts and special prizes for participating.

 We are looking forward to a healthy group walk and on Saturday, June 5, all walkers will be acknowledged at a celebration.

In the Southern Maryland Region LISS can be accessed through Maryland Community Connection for residents of Calvert, Charles, Montgomery, Prince George’s, or St. Mary’s Counties. MCC will be conducting information sessions on how to access this service, what services and supports are covered by LISS, and what other county and state resources are available for individuals with developmental disabilities.
